  2. Hide Your Cords!

    Hide Your Cords!

In this age of technology, your outlets are bound to be knotted up with cords and chargers of all kinds. (In a few years I predict most chargers will be cordless, but that just isn’t the case yet. So, for now, let’s talk about a solution). If you want to keep from having a messy-looking desk, nightstand, or kitchen counter, then you'll have to find a way to keep your cords organized without having to unplug them, wrap them up, and put them away after every use.

It bothers me that whenever I clean my living room, it never truly feels clean because the cords are so messy-looking! And along with TV cords, there are probably certain cords that

  3. How to Fill in Cabinet Holes (or Cracks, Dents, and Chips)

How to Fill in Cabinet Holes (or Cracks, Dents, and Chips)

If you want an updated kitchen, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money, changing out the cabinet hardware is an inexpensive, yet successful way to do it. I’ve talked about this the "How to Install Cup Pulls"  blog post, but I didn’t go over how to fill in the holes left behind after removing the old hardware.

Whether you’re switching out cabinet knobs for pulls or changing the placement of your knobs/pulls or replacing hinges, you’ll probably need to fill the old holes. But how?! I have always known that filling in wall holes was easy. But wood cabinets seemed difficult, if not impossible.

Not so! The easiest option in my opinion is to use Timbermate wood filler. It is seriously so simple! And aside from its simplicity, it works well and it’s affordable.

  4. Grout Part 2: Contrast or Complementary—The Grout Dilemma

Grout Part 2: Contrast or Complementary—The Grout Dilemma

Recently I walked into a friend’s home and admired the brand new kitchen backsplash, enjoying the smooth, even finish of the tile. The dark brown lines between the natural stone mosaic with linear stripes looked amazing! The dark brown brought the lighter colored backsplash to life—the contrast of brown against ivory accentuated the beauty of the tiling project. Yet much of the magic of it was created by the dark brown lines—which were not even part of the actual tile! Over a cup of coffee, I received a quick lesson on grouting.

Do you remember your schooling years? Colors and creativity were at their best!

As an adult, we don’t always get the chance to relive those happy memories. But there are actually plenty of ways for adults to get creative again and have fun with colors. Grouting tiles is one way to do that—I kid you not.

Usually, choosing the tile you want will give you a clear idea about the theme of the space... or maybe you choose

  7. Problems Hanging Wall Pictures? WallGenie 123 is Your Solution

Problems Hanging Wall Pictures? WallGenie 123 is Your Solution

Considered one of the easiest DIY projects to tackle on your own, hanging wall pictures and paintings has been a time-honored tradition for centuries.  I can feel your cringe already when I said "easy". In fact, hanging wall pictures is also responsible for countless arguments, achy arm muscles, and the head-pounding overuse of the phrases, "juuuust a little bit more to the left," and "It's not level, we need to fix it." Do these sound familiar to you? Well, if you've ever tried to hang anything, I'm sure they do.

When you're looking at hanging art on the wall there are three factors to consider:

    1. Weight and weight distribution of the art: Whatever tools you use to hang your wall art need to be strong enough to hold the art. For most framed art 10lbs. is plenty strong enough, for heavier artwork you will need hardware that can hold 25+ lbs.
    2. Placement: Placement or arrangement is important to give your house aesthetically pleasing decor.
    3. Straightness:

Get it Straight! What's that Wednesday's Bosch Self-levelling Cross Line Laser Level with Clamp Mount

Drawing straight lines are a nightmare and without a scale or a ruler, it would be absolutely impossible (for me) to get a simple one dimension line on paper – straight!

But the problem of getting lines straight is amplified when attempting DIY projects. Whether it is installing a new bookshelf on the wall or getting the kitchen cabinets to look perfect – getting the level straight is critical.

Using the traditional methods of establishing the exact level is a tiresome option, so if you are exhausted trying to chalk and measure lines for your DIY project, try the Bosch self-levelling cross line laser level with clamp mount – it is the easiest available method to ensure you don’t spend precious time on marking lines.  Accurate, visible straight horizontal and vertical lines formed by a self-correcting device – a must – and vertical

  9. How to Care for your Granite and Quartz Countertops

How to Care for your Granite and Quartz Countertops

In our blog post, Countertops: Granite Vs. Quartz, we discussed the pros and cons of granite and quartz countertops and how your decision has a lot to do with your lifestyle and needs. Today I’d like to talk a bit about how you care for your countertops, and guess what? A solution of 409 or all-purpose cleaner may not be your best option.

    Granite

Let’s start with granite. Granite countertops are great if on occasion you need to chop on the surface, or possibly lay a hot pot, or pan. Granite countertops are durable and considered scratch resistant, however, it is important to have your countertops sealed and maintained. While granite can generally tackle these kitchen duties, it is still recommended that you use a knife block and hot-pads. If for anything this provides peace of mind.

In 2013, we had beautiful new countertops installed in our kitchen and bathrooms.
